Orthodontics<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the field of odontology specialized in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial defects or irregularities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The term is used to define problems such as malocclusion- an incorrect relation between the upper and lower teeth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Orthodontics seeks to create a harmony between the teeth, lips, and maxillary bones, providing an appropriate facial balance.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the source of orthodontic problems?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Malocclusion can have a hereditary origin, meaning passed from parents to children. The size of maxillary bones and teeth are typical inherited influences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other groups of problems are the causes acquired, generated by the suction of the pacifier, fingers, respiratory problems, dental caries, missing teeth, traumatisms, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

The interaction of these problems demands a meticulous diagnosis, planification, and treatment, as what at first sight seems to be a simple case, if badly planned, can become a big problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

When must I consult with a specialist in orthodontics?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ideally, the first evaluation of the patient should be at seven years-old. An early exam on a child allows the orthodontist to evaluate and detect any orthodontic problems and plan for some treatment, if needed. Otherwise, the specialist will guide the parents to return for a new evaluation or to start the orthodontic treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does orthodontic treatment work?<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A diverse type of devices, fixed and removable, are used to move the teeth, train the muscles again, and modify the growth of the jaws. These devices work by applying a gentle pressure on teeth and bones. The severity of the problem will determine which will be the more efficient orthodontic approach.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does an orthodontic treatment last?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The orthodontic treatment usually lasts a period of between 18 to 36 months. In some cases, this will be able to finish before, and in others, it may take longer than planned initially for the completion. The overall time of the treatment depends on the severity of the original malocclusion, type of treatment, and the patient\u2019s cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can adult patients receive orthodontic treatment?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before, orthodontic treatment was associated with children. However, the basic process that encompasses the teeth is the same at any age, and with these, adults can also benefit from this treatment. In addition, with the evolution of the systems for treatment, the devices are becoming more and more esthetic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why carry out an orthodontic treatment?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To obtain a better function, health, and appearance of the teeth.<\/span><\/p>\n
